International Medical Coding Systems

ICD-10 for diagnosis is genuinely global. The code for the visit or procedure itself is not — CPT is authored in the United States, and most other countries have their own real system their payers actually require. A tool that only knows CPT gets this wrong for almost everyone outside the US; a tool that assumes CPT never applies abroad gets it wrong for the Gulf specifically, where it's mandated.

Cognivolt doesn't hold a fixed table mapping every country in the world to a coding system — no vendor honestly can, since payer requirements vary and change. Instead, for any country outside the US, it's instructed to name whichever system that country's own healthcare payers genuinely require in real clinical billing, label that system explicitly on every code, and — this is the part most tools skip — leave the field empty rather than invent a plausible-looking code when a country has no standardized system at all. A fabricated billing code is worse than no code.

The table below lists the countries specifically confirmed in Cognivolt's own coding logic — not a claim of covering every country in the world.

CountryVisit/procedure systemWhy
United StatesCPTThe system CPT is authored for; used directly.
United KingdomOPCS-4The UK's own procedure classification, used alongside ICD-10.
AustraliaMBS item numbersMedicare Benefits Schedule item numbers.
GermanyEBM / GOÄEBM for statutory insurance, GOÄ for private billing.
CanadaCCICanadian Classification of Health Interventions.
United Arab EmiratesCPTMandated by DHA/DOH eClaim despite being US-authored.
Saudi ArabiaCPTMandated by CCHI/NPHIES despite being US-authored.
PakistanNone — ICD-10 onlyNo standardized national visit/procedure coding system in routine billing. Cognivolt leaves this field empty here rather than invent one.

What happens for a country not listed here?

The same instruction applies: use whichever system that country's own payers genuinely require, name it explicitly, and leave the field empty rather than guess if no standardized system exists. This page will only ever list a country once its answer has actually been checked and confirmed — that's a deliberate choice to keep this list short and accurate rather than long and half-guessed.

See how this fits into the rest of clinical decision support on diagnosis-gated coding — nothing here generates before a clinician confirms the diagnosis themselves.
